ANIMAL HEALTH TECHNICIAN for the National Institute of National Human Genome Research Institute in buildings 49 and 35 under the direction of the NHGRI Medical Genetics Branch.
Candidate must be able to work independently and communicate well with a wide variety of people. Candidate shall be certified or able to be certified at the AALAS LAT level or have an LVT. Applicant will be required to obtain a LATG certification within 1-4 years, if not certified.
Candidate must also have at least two years of experience working with mice. Candidate should have experience with animal caretaking procedures and be able to perform the following duties: (1) Humane handling and restraint of mice for various protocol-related manipulations; (2)Monitor health and well-being of animals; (3)Set up/monitor mouse breeding as needed to include routine plug checks; (4)Routine technical procedures such as sex identification, tail snips, ear punches, and weanings; (5)Colony management of a variety of inbred transgenic mice; (6)Maintenance of detailed colony records. Must be able to lift up to 60lbs, climb, stoop, bend, reach, and stand for prolonged periods. Must be responsible and reliable to work independently and maintain good customer and team relationships (e.g., investigative staff, care staff, etc.). Must be available to work evenings and weekends when necessary.
Must have a working knowledge of veterinary medicine and technology (first aid response, pharmacy and pharmacology, physiology, physical examination, and treatment under the direction of a veterinarian) with mice. The candidate must have technical experience and competency in anesthesia and surgical support to include IV, SQ, IM, and IP injections, in phlebotomy via tail vein and retro-orbital route, anesthesia induction, maintenance, and recovery using injectables and inhalants. Perform aseptic surgical procedures and provide assistance to investigator(s) with technical procedures in biologic sample collection, harvesting tissues and staged embryos. Experience with approved euthanasia techniques of mice and be able to perform formalin perfusion on deeply anesthesized mice for tissue collection. The ideal candidate will have experience in laboratory procedures in order to assist with genotyping (e.g., DNA extractions, PCR, enzymatic assays).
Formal education shall include a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent. Demonstrated math and reading comprehension, good English oral and written communication skills are required.
